What is family therapy?

It’s increasingly hard to define what constitutes a modern family, but the therapists at The Soho Center for Mental Health Counseling & Clinical Supervision believe that any group of two or more individuals who are closely associated and interact regularly in a personal way make up a family dynamic. In other words, blood has little to do with whether or not you’re part of a family.

If you find yourself in a family that’s having trouble with communication, where resentments, misunderstandings, and anger are rife, family therapy is designed to address the behaviors of each member of the family and how they affect the group as a whole.

This last point is important. Personal behaviors are far from personal in a family setting. Family therapy sheds light on how these behaviors may be misperceived or how they may have an effect on others in the close circle.

When is family therapy appropriate?

Let’s face it, finding the perfect family is near impossible. No matter how large or how small, families are made up of distinct personalities, which means there’s always room for miscommunication. Because families need to operate as a whole for harmony, the behavior of one individual can have a cascading effect on the others.

The most common reasons why many families seek therapy is to address:

  • Conflict
  • Substance abuse by one member
  • Miscommunication
  • Behavioral problems in children
  • Conditions such as depression, eating disorders, and anxiety
  • Sexual abuse
  • Caring for elderly members
  • Grief and loss

This list represents some of the more common reasons why people seek family therapy, but anytime there’s a disruption to the dynamic, family therapy helps restore love and respect to the unit.

What methods are used in family therapy?

The therapists use several different techniques when dealing with family issues that fall under psychotherapy. Through individual and group counseling, the goal of family therapy is to provide a safe environment in order to explore problems and issues and, more importantly, to find solutions. Typically family therapy lasts for about 12 sessions, with plenty of “homework” in between sessions.

Rest assured that the clinicians at The Soho Center for Mental Health Counseling & Clinical Supervision use every tool available to restore and protect the family unit. To explore your options in family therapy, call the office or request a consultation using the online scheduling tool.
