Baris Unsal obtained her bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and proceeded to study clinical psychology. Before transferring to New York University Mental Health and Counseling MA program, she completed all her theoretical coursework at Istanbul Bilgi University in Turkey.
Baris Unsal has been working with underserved populations such as asylum seekers, LGBTQ individuals and people who live in poverty. Her main areas of focus are anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders and psychosis. She is specializing in psychodynamic techniques and psychoanalytic thought with a strong emphasis on multiculturalism and social justice. She values non-hierarchical therapy relationships and provides a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Along with clinical practice, Baris conducts a qualitative research about self-injurious behaviors in adolescence and mentalization capacity of mothers diagnosed with major depression. She translates and edits psychoanalytic articles and is a licensed Rorschach Inkblot Test and Thematic Apperception Test administrator. She provides psychotherapy in three languages: English, French and Turkish.
